Taking Notes As I Go When I Dream
I am my own boss. I can do whatever I want.... But...
I also need to make sure I make enough to pay the bills. Grrrr.... That is the rub. Well ... I'm reading and writing more everyday than I ever have before. It's exciting.
Just an FYI... I had a weird sci-fi dream last night. I'm writing it all down. I have never had this kind of dream before. I was part of a team to fight some sort of alien bad guy. It's all fuzzy. Kind of like Pacific Rim. Weird.

Life After Work
After taking some time off during the summer to hang with my kids, I know it's now time to hustle.
My goal is to work for myself. That means pay all my bills and meet all my expenses solely on my own efforts.
I do not want to get another job. It has been challenging. June, July and August have tested my resolve. In the end, I hope this will allow me more time to pursue my writing and artistic endeavors.
Despite the challenges, I have had so much more time to read books and write in my journal throughout the day. I have been able to work on more of my art.
But the balance isn't there yet. There have been several setbacks during these three months of summer. I'm not giving up though. Besides... the experience is giving me tons to write about.
So... time to hit the road. It's about 2:30 p.m. Time to pay the bills. More on that later.

All The Things I've Forgotten Over The Years: What I'm Doing To Relearn It All Now
My rescue cat, Leppard, is pawing around at my feet. He is near my work table as I sit between my computer desk and my writing/craft/dining room table. A black, rolling office chair makes it easy for me to move from one station to the other.
I'm a fitful worker. The mood strikes, and I want to type a few words for my blog. One of the books on my multi-use table calls to me. So, I read a few pages. Then, I notice another book on my shelves. I roll over and grab it.
That gives me an idea for my brown journal - the one I often carry in the breast pocket (with a pen jammed within its pages) of my wool Pea coat. I pause as I jot down the words p-e-a-c-o-a-t. I realize that I have forgotten how the phrase goes. Is it all one word? Is it capitalized?
I google it and settle on: Pea coat... if only to get on with it and take another swig of my drink.
Then it comes to me: I've forgotten quite a bit. I'm speaking of knowledge... nuggets that were once ingrained in my memory, which I could recall at will if prompted. I was once a Trivial Pursuit god.
I've come to the conclusion that I have forgotten too much. So.... time to rediscover all that knowledge. That will be my task for the foreseeable future.
History. Art. Philosophy. Science. Literature. Music.
I dare say that I have forgotten more than some ever ventured to learn in the first place. Many still have outpaced me. All the same... I'm excited to dive back into Greek mythology. And... I just got super excited... I grabbed one of my old grammar books off the shelf and started reading about the parts of a sentence, parts of speech.... Oh, yeah! My skin tingled.
This will be an adventure. Why not? What else am I doing? What else are any of us doing? Living the same routine day after day. Why not shake things up? Why merely exist? Why not broaden our experience by reacquainting ourselves with our past passions? On this adventure... I M -A -Y even look at subjects I ignored or found distasteful growing up. Math... Ewwww. A subject I wish I would have paid more attention to: Physics. Ahhh... it fascinates me... but... darned math gets in the way again!
I dare say that deepening our knowledge would make us feel more poignantly about our everyday experiences. I'll keep a journal of my progress... of my observations. If you want, join me. Journal and share your experiences.
OK... my glass is empty... and another book on my shelves has caught my attention.

What You Must Do Every Day To Find Stories To Write About?
A simple Google definition: notice or perceive something and register it as being significant.
The hard parts are at the beginning and at the end. We must first notice. Then, we must perceive what we notice as significant.
I'm sorry to say that most of us plow through life without noticing or perceiving. I might include would-be writers in that category. But... you are different if you choose to be. It's your choice.
You think you can write? You think you have a short story, poem, novel in you? Maybe. What's stopping you? There are many answers to that question. I will only address two in this post: writing a short story or novel.
Truly.... the barriers to writing either could be a lack of knowledge of grammar, education, experience, or the conventions of fiction, etc., etc.
I'm here to tell you... You can bone up on all that. But... if you want to be a writer, you must first own one skill first. I believe it is the most important skill to master as a writer - granted you have the ability to create sentences. That skill is observation.
A little background here. I studied at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. It is one of the hardest journalism programs to get into. I not only made it as a student there, but I returned as a professor.
Something I have never forgotten, wisdom that has helped me, as a journalist and as a writer of fiction, to this day is this: Observe everything you encounter with the eyes of a child.
The question for you? Why are the eyes of a child more perceptive than those of an adult?
Answer... everything is new to a child. Adults are jaded. Been there. Done that. Nothing new to see here.
Yet... as writers, we must fight that compulsion to dismiss the "ordinary."
Case in point... I was driving to work, as usual, the other day. I take the same route. It requires no real thought to drive out of my apartment complex... onto the road... then to the highways that eventually lead me to my destination.
But.... while I was stuck in traffic the other day, I noticed something. I was observing. I saw something on Valentine's Day that I thought was interesting. Here is my observation of that moment. Is it something? Or nothing? It is something? As a writer, you can make it something. I say it's something. It hones your skill to pull writing exercises out of random events in life.
Go find your own moments. Let me know what you find. I'd love to hear them.
In case you missed it:
Trying to keep going even when your body doesn't.
An observation exercise on Valentine's Day. What do you see as you go about your day?

Let's Get Vulnerable: A Moment Of Truth
I'm writing. I'm seeing stories everywhere. Yet... for those who have followed me... if you're still here from years past, you may be curious about my lapse.
I neglected this blog for awhile. Life got in the way. A move across the country. A separation. A divorce. The resulting depression and ultimate acceptance.
And here we are. What helped me rebound?
I recall one of my earliest memories. It was of my mother reading herself to sleep. It was after she and my father divorced. She was a single mom.
I was often fearful at night... I'm not psychologist, but I figure I was trying to cope with my parents divorce. I didn't want to sleep alone for irrational fear that I'd wake up without either parent.
So... I slept near my mother... in visual proximity. I had to see her bed or I just didn't feel safe. What did I see? It influenced me more than I or she could imagine.
She read. She read into the wee hours of the night. I only caught a glimpse of it. But... oh, what a sight it was. She read novels. Her favorite... It was the 70's after all... Stephen King.
We didn't have much. Just mom and I. She read alone at night...
but she wasn't really alone. I was watching... and flash forward decades... now, her example from so long ago inspires me and helps remind me who I am or should remember to be... a lover of words... and a writer.
Thank you, mother. Te amo.

OMG! Is 2017 Actually Coming To An End? You Didn't Meet Your Writing Goals Did You?
Now January 1st, 2018 is upon us. OMG!
I can say this much about 2017... I failed miserably with my writing goals. Maybe... God forbid... you're like me... I spent day after day saying, "Tomorrow... I'll have time tomorrow..."
Ha! tomorrow is here. I wrote some notes... filled a few pages in a spiral notebook. But, didn't finish that novel.
Also... If you are an aspiring writer... you MUST READ! If you write poetry... Read poetry. If you write short stories... Read short stories, etc.
I read some. I wrote some... But, I did neither in the volume I should have as an aspiring writer. Let's not sugar coat it or go all snowflake and blame someone else for my poor decisions.
I blew it. I didn't work on my craft enough to actually call it a craft. A truism: you can't call yourself a writer if you don't actually WRITE!
I know... tough love. But, I'm a father of five. I'm a tough love kind of guy because I know it pays dividends.
Moving forward, what does that mean??? First of all, after correcting one of my children, doling out whatever punishments were necessary, then it'd be time for restoring harmony.
What does that mean? You can rebuke yourself for falling short. Fine. Then... a restorative measure is necessary. Restore the creative process. Otherwise how can you move forward?
Forgive yourself for blowing it. Then... GET OVER IT. Get back to writing.
Set new resolutions. Maybe this time scale them back a bit and make them more realistic... or shoot for the moon, but, bring in a friend to keep you accountable.
Bottom line: Get back on the horse. Write. Start with one word. Then two; then 20; then 100... Keep going.
2017 may be at an end. You may not have accomplished what you wanted. .. But, 2018 is around the corner. Now's your time. Make it happen this year.
You can do it.

The Best Way To Use Your Time As A Writer: Don't Listen To The Haters
IT DOESN'T MATTER!!!!
You know that you are a writer. You hear the voices in your head. You dream magically amazing stories in your sleep. You wake up and are like, "Damn! I need to write that down!"
But... you have Debbie Downers in your camp. You share your ideas with those around you. They say, "That's stupid."
What should you do?
Write it down. Write everything they say. Write everything you think in the moment. Write. Write. Write!!!!!
Don't listen to the haters.
Here is the reality. Most people live life unsuccessfully. They believe that they are not one of the lucky ones who get to be a writer, a movie star.... in short... a success.
They settle. I need a job. So... this company will give me a job at XX amount of dollars an hour. I need to pay the bills.
Fall into that trap and you will never be a writer. You will be a wage earner.
Don't get me wrong... You must pay the bills... But you don't have to give up your dreams to do it....
I quit my day job. I decided I would make my own future. It's been rough... but I'm still at it...
As a writer, that means ignoring everyone who says I can't do it. Even family has questioned my decisions. Maybe yours has too. But... be brave. Follow your dream.
Just do it strategically...

Back To Writing Despite Hardships
So many excuses. Life gets hard. People stop loving you. The world seems to be against you. Why not just give up?
Yeah... Well...it's been awhile. But.... I'm not giving up. Life has kicked me in the pants...hard. Yes.. isn't when writers write? Our strength is taking the pain, joy, emotions of life and creating written work.
I forgot that. Back to writing.

1 Thing All Writers Must Endure To Succeed

Romance Writers Use Music Prompts
However, I get it. Many write and love the Romance genre. As I'm sitting at my computer listening to iTunes as I blog, I heard two songs that even inspired me, a non-Romance guy, to think of possible stories revolving around that age old passion that draws men and women: love.
Now love must be complicated. It must be hard. Obstacles are required to make a good story. Lovers just can't meet and then they live happily ever after. They must face obstacles. They must fight for the love they desire - often against seemingly insurmountable odds. That makes a great story.
To spur any would-be Romance writers, I offer two songs as prompts. Listen to them. Use them as prompts to write a story about lovers fighting against the world. Those are the stories that readers want. Two against the world. Another dear friend I spoke to today used the phrase, "Ride or die."
Rather appropriate. It creates conflict. Drama. Passion. Do you feel it? Yes? Then write it. Here are two songs I believe can inspire you to write a tale of Romance:
"Don't Worry Baby," by The Beach Boys.
"A Thousand Years," by Christina Perri.
Writing Through Hardship
Life is full of moments that test us. Hardships. Failures. Heartaches. These are the stuff of life. Yes, happy moments are also part of life. But the tough times often define us the most.
As a writer, it is during tough times - like this moment of hardship and heartache that I find myself in - that I find comfort in words. Pouring my heart out on the page (Yes, I am old school and still use pen and paper) helps me endure.
If you are going through a tough time, consider writing through it. Don't worry if it looks pretty. Don't worry about grammar. Nobody but you has to see it. Just write through the pain. Write through the tears.
Often my pages are stained with tears. It's ok. That is genuineness on the page. Write. Heal. Write some more. Heal some more.

One Reason Why It's A Good Day
I have some of the kids reading, some watching a movie. Earlier it was quite the task to get them to clean the entertainment room and the inevitable spillover of toys and books in the living room, dining room, the halls, the bathrooms...sigh!... OK, every square inch of the house.
That all done, I sat on the couch (I mean, reclined) and read. I found a Tennessee Williams quote about his sister that struck me. So, I grabbed my notebook to jot it down and my thoughts on it. The quote made me think of a scene for my characters. Then I fell asleep.
Only for five minutes, because the kids started fighting about whose turn it was on the video game.
The one reason why it was a good day: I was able to find the inspiration to write. Even if you only get a few minutes, write. If you do today or tomorrow or next week, then consider it a good day.

New Year, New Look
During this time of transition, I have neglected this blog. But, I believe I'm at the point I can revamp it. Bear with me as I try out different looks. I will be back up and running daily soon.
I have a few projects in the works and am excited to share them with everyone. They will include more visuals - including videos.

The 2 Must-Have Qualities For Writing Success
I decided to start Freedman's book first. Logic behind it: I worked as a journalist for more than a dozen years before working on my current project - seven modern fantasy novels I call the Mall Demons Series.
I reached Page 7 of Freedman's book when I came across a sentence that forced me to re-read. The number seven has always been my lucky number, and it is considered a number of spiritual perfection in the Bible. I know, I digress. But I believe today of all days was the day to begin reading this book and come across this sentence because I just witnessed it in action in the classroom and was pleased.
The sentence lauded two qualities above another for achieving excellence. For me, considering my experience in the writing classes I've taught during the last few years, these two qualities are the ones my most successful students have possessed. What is funny is that some of my best students have confessed to me after the first day of class that they "hate writing," or "have never been any good at writing."
However, they possessed these two must-have qualities that helped them, by the end of the term, achieve writing success. The great thing about these two must-have qualities is that anybody can cultivate them. So, back to Freedman's book.
In this section of the book, Freedman shares about his experience as a first-time professor at Columbia University. In his discussion of that first class, Freedman says this: "I was affirmed in my belief that intellectual curiosity and a relentless work ethic matter infinitely more than natural ability in achieving excellence."
I did a double take. Yes! "Intellectual curiosity and a relentless work ethic." These are the two qualities my best writing students have possessed. I have had students who seemed to possess a natural ability to tell a compelling story. But many failed the course because they couldn't complete the work.
I was inspired today by one of my students who turned in a draft early. This student confessed early on in the term that "writing was not her thing." While the class took a quiz, I pulled out my orange pen and marked up the pages she gave me. I didn't spare one sentence. But I knew she would appreciate my meticulousness. All term she has examined and highlighted the writing textbook, asked question after question, and submitted draft after draft for my approval. On a few occasions she sent me e-mailed drafts hoping for an immediate response. "Before next class." All this from a student who admits she doesn't like writing.
Intellectual curiosity. Relentless work ethic.
After the quiz, I returned the draft to my student. Her eyes widened for a second at the sight of all the orange marks on her paper. Then she asked questions. "What does this mean?" "How do I fix this?" And then she said something that made me very happy. I forget her exact words, but it was something like, "It'll be great when I can get back a paper that has no orange marks on it."
That made my day.
Do you want to be a writer? Ask yourself: "Do I possess these two qualities?" Intellectual curiosity. Relentless work ethic. If not, cultivate them now.

Are You Scared Of Writing? I Will Help
There it is. Now you know. But, maybe, you aren't confident in your writing ability. Maybe, your schooling didn't help you. Maybe, you didn't pay attention in those English classes.
Well, now, you know better. But where do you go? How do you learn how to write? That's where I can help.
You're nervous. Scared. Embarrassed. Then ask me. I'm a writer. I've been writing professionally for nearly 20 years. I am a writing professor. So, confide in me. No question is off limits. What's a subject? What's a verb? How do you write a paragraph? I have the answer. Just ask. I'll help. I won't judge.
